I am most at home on the land, with my face to the ocean. Luckily for me, I have lived on Vancouver Island and by the ocean for most of my life. Yes, I did live in Calgary, Alberta, for about three years and, while I thought it was a great city with wonderful people and terrific recreation, I missed the British Columbia coastline, its weather and changing tides. I am also happy to be painting in the Cowichan Valley. And while my primary focus in on ocean and shoreline subjects, I will continue to add more paintings of the Valley and other Island locations to this portfolio.
I only went out for a walk, and finally concluded to stay out till sundown, for going out, I found, was really going in. —John Muir
When anxious, uneasy and bad thoughts come, I go to the sea, and the sea drowns them out with its great wide sounds, cleanses me with its noise, and imposes a rhythm upon everything in me that is bewildered and confused." —Rainer Maria Rilke
