Halcyon Kingfisher Day

10 x 8 watercolour on 140# Arches hot-pressed paper - Sold

Kingfishers are associated with Greek mythology. In brief, Halcyon (or Alcyone) was the Daughter of the Wind, who, when her husband was lost in a shipwreck, threw herself into the sea, after which both were compassionately transformed by the gods, Hera and Zeus, into kingfishers. Thereafter, kingfishers were believed to have a magical power to calm storms during their nesting—their Halcyon Days—a time of tranquility and peace.
