With this painting I was seeking the ephemeral and transparent quality of those delicate rainbows that develop when the sun appears while, at the same time, some of the landscape is still shrouded in clouds and showers. In preparing for this painting, I learned some things about rainbows that I hadn’t known before, such as their being visible only at a sky altitude of 42 degrees (and at 51 degrees if it’s a double rainbow).
